I hate to sell this wheel because it is sooooooo cute, but I just don’t have room for it at my house. I have another wheel that is coming home from being out on loan and I need the space.
This wheel is a Saxony Pipy wheel from New Zealand circa mid-1980’s. There are makers markings on the underside of the table (see pictures). It is made out of Rimu wool and has a nice brown wood tone to it. The main wheel is only 16 inches wide, so this is a small wheel that will fit in most houses. I included a ruler in one of the pictures. The wheel is weighted with three weights on one side so it does like to spinnnnnnn. It is double drive. I think you may be able to rig Scotch tension if you prefer by looping a cord around it with a spring.
I have changed out the drive band and adjusted the tension and flyer whorl so that, as you can see from the picture – full bobbin! - it now spins well. (DD was new to me when I got this.) The smaller whorl is the one on there now which works. The larger whorl is loose on the flyer rod and needs new bushings so it will fit more tightly. It could also be shimmed. It comes with three bobbins and a lazy Kate. Two of the bobbins have been mended, but it does not affect how well they work. There is another chip on the base of the mother-of-all that came with it.
There is no footman. There is a string instead. Some wheels are designed this way, as is the case with this one. It treadles very nicely and easily. Yeah! There is some chatter when it spins that could be adjusted with nylon washers.
I live New England along 495 and would be willing to travel some. I don’t think I want to try shipping this.
Price is $100 firm or best offer. Message me with any questions. I check in to my account several times a week.
